Scion Staffing has been engaged to conduct a search for an Interim Retail Managing Director for a mission-aligned, community-centered specialty retailer known for its cultural impact and loyal customer base. This full-time, onsite leadership opportunity is based in Austin, TX.
POSITION OVERVIEW:
The Interim Retail Managing Director will provide immediate leadership and oversight of strategic operations, team management, and day-to-day business functions for a values-driven retail organization. Known for curating thoughtful, mission-driven experiences, this specialty retailer seeks a dynamic and steady-handed leader who can guide the team during a transitional period. The ideal candidate is passionate about community, culture, and storytelling, and brings a hands-on, collaborative approach to leadership.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Partner with the Board of Directors to ensure organizational alignment and represent staff and shareholder interests
Lead daily operations across sales, finance, HR, purchasing, inventory, customer service, and IT
Support and mentor the leadership team and broader staff, reinforcing a high-performance, service-oriented culture
Oversee cash flow, budgets, compensation structures, and performance management processes
Manage relationships with legal counsel, consultants, union representatives, and external partners
Represent the company externally and support PR, marketing, and community engagement efforts
QUALIFICATIONS:
Proven leadership experience in retail, service, or mission-driven business environments
Strong financial and operational management skills, including budgeting and team oversight
Ability to step into an interim role and quickly stabilize, lead, and improve operations
Excellent communication skills and public-facing presence
A collaborative, hands-on leadership style with a passion for team development and customer experience
COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:
This is a full-time, onsite interim role in Austin, TX offering a pay rate of $48–$53/hour, depending on experience. Additionally, medical, dental, vision and voluntary life insurance, an employee assistance plan (EAP), and commuter and transit benefits for those who are working on average 30 or more hours per week.
