Scion Nonprofit Staffing is thrilled to partner on an immediate search for a Senior Director of California Policy Campaigns for an $18M national membership powerhouse nonprofit dedicated to the protection and advancement of reproductive freedom through grassroots organizing, electoral change, and political advocacy The Senior Director of California Campaigns must reside in California (preferably in the Bay Area or Northern California) and will work in a hybrid capacity, from home, along with in-person events, and must be prepared to travel primarily throughout California as needed. 

The Role Reporting to the Director of State Campaigns, the Senior Director of California Campaigns must be a go-getter with a positive attitude, strategic mindset, and ability to see the larger mission. The Senior Director will lead the California chapter and further establish a strong political and organizing program across the state. This role is responsible for designing and implementing campaign strategy, managing programs, and overseeing day-to-day operations.
The Senior Director will lead California Organizers and guide efforts to grow membership, particularly among young people and communities of color, while also engaging current supporters and mobilizing key constituencies to protect and expand reproductive rights at the state level. The individual in this role will design and execute organizing strategies and tactics that align with the organization’s mission and goals.

The Senior Director will also serve as a visible, inclusive, and strategic leader in statewide relationship-building, participating in coalition work, collaborating with partner organizations, engaging donors, and working alongside elected officials. The Senior Director of California Campaigns must be a subject matter expert and confident reporting to a supportive manager who is not a California expert.

Responsibilities:
  • Lead strategic legislative, political, organizing, and advocacy campaigns across California. This includes executing electoral strategies for candidates at all levels of the ballot, as well as advancing state policies that expand and protect reproductive rights and freedoms.
  • Manage the state-level program budget, ensuring resources are allocated effectively to strengthen local power-building efforts.
  • Provide direct management and support to Organizers, overseeing the recruitment, engagement, and mobilization of a statewide network of volunteers, members, and activists through diverse outreach activities that grow both organizing and political impact.
  • Build and maintain strong, strategic relationships with state policymakers and government leaders to strengthen the organization’s presence in California and advocate for reproductive freedom in alignment with member priorities.
  • Collaborate with the Political team to develop and implement electoral priorities for California at both the state and federal levels.
  • Draft and deliver written materials highlighting on-the-ground advocacy work to support Digital and Fundraising teams.
  • Partner with the Communications team to craft compelling messages and strategies that counter opposition narratives, amplify opportunities to leverage political influence, and advance the organization’s mission. Serve as a spokesperson in California when needed.
  • Provide vision and leadership by working closely with the Director of State Campaigns to set statewide strategic direction, priorities, and policies.
  • Collaborate with the Development team to strengthen relationships with current donors and cultivate meaningful connections with major institutional and individual donors.
  • Support the fundraising efforts of the Leadership Councils in San Francisco and the Peninsula by actively participating in meetings and events.
  • Represent the organization’s goals and mission in both national and local contexts, engaging with partners and coalition efforts to advance shared priorities.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Must reside in the Bay Area or Northern California.
  • 10+ years of professional experience in campaign strategy, leadership, and execution.
  • 5+ years in senior leadership and political campaigning roles in California.
  • Specialization: Must have campaign experience (political, issue-based, or ballot measure).
  • Proven experience leading political or organizational campaigns, with a strong background in grassroots organizing strategies.
  • Deep knowledge of California’s political landscape and ability to strategically navigate relationships with key stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated success in coalition-building and maintaining strong relationships with diverse stakeholders, communities, and partners.
  • Strong leadership and supervisory skills, with a track record of effectively managing, mentoring, and developing organizing staff.
  • Excellent organizational abilities with demonstrated success in managing multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Commitment to advancing reproductive rights and related intersectional issues of justice and civil rights.
  • Dedication to embedding anti-racism, diversity, equity, and inclusion in all aspects of planning and execution.
  • Cultural competency and the ability to work effectively with diverse groups and a multicultural workforce.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish 
  • Experience with VAN/P2P tools and platforms.
  • Experience as an on-the-record spokesperson 
  • Experience managing budgets, and familiarity with 501 (C)3 and 501 (C)4 funding mechanisms 

Compensation & Benefits:
This impactful and highly rewarding full-time opportunity offers a competitive base salary of up to $150,000-$165,000 DOE, a hybrid schedule, plus a robust benefits package that includes medical, vacation, sick time, and so much more!
