Scion Nonprofit has been engaged to conduct an immediate search for a Director of Finance and Operations for our client, a professional development and mentorship nonprofit organization in greater Washington, DC! This exciting role leads annual budgeting and financial planning at an organization that supports college graduates in Africa in pursuing careers in civil service. This permanent, full-time position is available for immediate hire. Based in the organization’s HQ office in Washington, DC, this role offers a remote/hybrid working possibility and requires occasional travel to overseas locations in support of the organization’s mission.

 

ROLE SUMMARY:

The Director of Finance and Operations serves as a key leader of the organization and manages its internal infrastructure. Reporting to the Executive Director, the Director of Finance and Operations possesses a strong background in accounting and financing, including strategic financial planning and analysis, grants management, and partnership development with finance leads. This role provides the opportunity to make an impact and significantly change the landscape for talented professionals in Africa pursuing civil-service careers from day one!

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Financial Planning and Analysis

  • Lead the organization’s financial planning through the development of annual program-based budgets and long-range financial plans.
  • Collaborate with local implementing partners to align the budgeting process.
  • Develop and deliver accurate financial reports and analyses that support decision-making across the organization and at the board level, while also building the team’s financial literacy.
  • Produce timely financial reports for each program—including monthly budget versus actual reports—to present and discuss with leadership and senior program staff.
  • Prepare budgets for submission in partnership with leadership and other staff.
  • Prepare and monitor cash flow projections on a regular basis.

 

Accounting

  • Direct day-to-day accounting functions and record all financial transactions, maintaining records in compliance with GAAP, policies, procedures, and internal controls.
  • Lead a consistent and timely monthly closing process.
  • Provide supervision to the accountant.
  • Oversee and monitor internal controls and finance functions, making recommendations for policy changes and process improvements.
  • Track the schedule of program and time-restricted net assets.

 

Compliance

  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local requirements; monitor fiscal compliance with funder requirements.
  • Formulate, recommend, and implement sound fiscal policies, procedures, and controls in compliance with funder requirements.
  • Assist external auditors with the annual financial audit and preparing IRS Form 990.

 

Grants Management

  • Support grants management by leading budget development and financial reporting processes in coordination with the Development lead.
  • Partner with, and serve as the main point of contact for, the finance leads in each of the country partners, including reviewing country-level financial reports, forecasts, disbursement requests, and cash flow projections.
  • Support the organization’s global staff to ensure they have the financial information and capacity needed for their respective responsibilities.

 

Operations

  • Drive operational excellence by creating systems, policies, and processes to ensure efficiency and effectiveness as the organization grows.
  • Manage the organization’s risk efforts (including monitoring insurance coverage and requirements) and its intellectual property portfolio.
  • Oversee the organization’s information technology systems/resources and its human resources functions, including hiring processes, employee onboarding, professional development support, compensation and benefits analyses, and worker’s compensation administration.
  • Negotiate, monitor, and manage vendor, consultant, and other third-party relationships/contracts.
  • Communicate operational goals and plans to all levels of the organization and to key stakeholders.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum Qualifications

  • Minimum 7+ years of accounting and finance experience required.
  • Track record of leadership progression with supervisory experience.
  • Ability to work effectively at a senior level, including partnering with the Executive Director and the Board of Directors.
  • Strong GAAP accounting expertise.
  • Experience in grants management.
  • Experience with systems such as Sage Intacct, QuickBooks Online, Expensify, and other cloud-based financial management platforms.
  • Demonstrated record of effectively and collaboratively designing, implementing, and managing large-scale, multi-stakeholder projects, systems, and processes to ensure effective and efficient operations, including with respect to annual budgeting, multi-year planning, and reporting.
  • Excellent analytical and organizational skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • A collaborative, team-based approach to building strong partnerships.
  • Great attention to detail and follow-through.
  • Ability to manage multiple competing priorities and deadlines.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and Google Suite.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Nonprofit management experience.
  • Experience working with clients across a range of geographic backgrounds, particularly across the African continent.
  • An interest in capacity building and mission-driven work.
  • Experience with administrative human resources and/or an IT background.
  • Certified Professional Accounting (CPA) designation.

 

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:

This exciting opportunity offers the ability to create a substantial impact with an amazingly dedicated team. Compensation includes a salary range of $120,000–$140,000 annually depending on qualifications and experience, plus a benefits package. This is an opportunity that will inspire you daily!
