Position Overview:

Reporting to the President and CEO, Starfire is seeking an accomplished Director of Communications and Public Relations who has at least 7 years of communications or public relations experience in a nonprofit entity and a minimum of 3 years in fundraising or grant writing/management. This position is responsible for managing all communication plan activities and building external relationships with the organization’s constituencies. They will set and guide the strategy for all communications, website, fundraising, and public relations messages and collateral to consistently articulate Starfire’s mission and impact. Most importantly, this person will take on the crucial task of developing an organization-wide brand identity. As a senior contributor to the team, this person should be someone who is always thinking ‘how can we do this better?’ and ‘what’s next?’ to bring the Starfire vision to life.

Primary Responsibilities:
 
  • Develop and implement an integrated, organization-wide strategic communications plan to broaden awareness within the nonprofit sector and Starfire’s brand identity across key stakeholder audiences.
  • Create an organizational brand identity to help shape the company’s outward image and raise awareness about what makes Starfire unique within the community.
  • Work with the CEO and the board to recognize internal and external communications and execute appropriate strategies to support them.
  • Provide the CEO and the board with key messaging opportunities to support community awareness.
  • Design and execute a fundraising development strategy that supports and focuses on new and existing partnerships.
  • Successfully manage the grant life cycle and identify new opportunities for funding.
  • Identify challenges and emerging issues faced by the organization and the community.
  • Develop and produce content to engage and educate audiences across various channels, including newsletters, graphics, websites, and social media.
  • Lead the generation of online content that engages audience segments and leads to measurable action.  Decide who, where, and when to disseminate.
  • Continue to build on the State, County, and City relationships
  • Develop a brand voice and maintain brand integrity across all platforms.
  • Research and collect information and data for content and communications strategy.
  • Put communication vehicles in place to create momentum and awareness as well as test the effectiveness of communication activities.

Qualifications:
 
  • Bachelor’s degree in nonprofit administration, communications, fundraising, public relations, or a related discipline.
  • Minimum of 7 years of increasing responsibility within the nonprofit sector and considerable experience in communication, public relations, or development position.
  • Proven working experience as a brand manager with the ability to develop brand and marketing strategies and communicate those recommendations to the leadership team.
  • 3+ years of successful grant writing and fundraising experience.
  • Proven success leading campaigns and initiatives around rebranding and community engagement.
  • Strong oral and written communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to form and maintain positive work relationships.
  • Sincere commitment to working collaboratively with all staff, board members, donors, program participants, and other supporters.
  • Analytical and creative mind that will aid in identifying and capitalizing upon opportunities for furthering Starfire’s mission and enhancing materials, events, and campaigns with marketing potential.
  • Leadership skills to serve as a unifying force and to position communication discussion at both the strategic and tactical levels.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and proficiency with communications technology, including social media platforms and social media marketing.
  • Self-starter, able to work independently, and entrepreneurial; enjoys creating and implementing new initiatives.

Compensation & Benefits:

In addition to a competitive base salary of up to $140,000 (DOE), this opportunity offers a robust benefits package that includes medical, dental, vision, and a 100% company-matched IRA, 15 days PTO, 11 paid holidays, and 3 paid volunteer days.
