Earth Day is April 22nd. We hope you take some time today, wherever you are, to enjoy and appreciate our earth! This day serves as a reminder to care for our world. There are many steps we can take to tend to our earth and keep it as healthy as possible. As so many of us are continuing to work from home, we’ve put together a list of ways we can practice sustainability throughout our work days.

Reduce gas emissions. If you are working from home, you’re likely not in a car commuting every day. Congratulations! You’ve help eliminate some of your carbon footprint. But, much of our carbon footprint can still be found with our routines and practices as we work from home.

Make your lunch. When you are home during the day, you have access to your fridge and food. You can easily practice sustainability by eating those leftovers and food that may have otherwise gone to waste. Not only is this practice good for the environment, it’s also great for your health! Win-win.

Understand the footprint of your data storage. In this article by the Homeworker, they share that “These data storage centres consume vast amounts of energy and have a huge impact on the environment with emissions rivalling the (pre-Covid) aviation industry.” That’s a lot of energy. They encourage people to “start thinking twice about hitting ‘reply to all’ and not deleting the emails filling our inboxes.”

Be aware of what’s plugged in. Here’s an easy one: laptop and cellphone chargers are a must have. But they don’t need to be constantly plugged in. As you unplug, you are reducing the energy output. Additionally, as you work from home, you can be aware of other appliances in your home that may not need to be plugged in at all times.

Add plants. Simple as that. Generally home offices offer more natural light which is fantastic for plants to thrive in. Adding plants can boost your immune system, productivity and clean your air. That’s a win, win, win.

We’ve all had to adapt and change this past year – and our earth has had to do so as well. The earth saw many positive effects from the population being forced to slow down. As things continue to get back to normal, we hope you will join us in adapting these sustainable practices to your work. Happy Earth Day!
