Scion Nonprofit Staffing has been engaged to conduct an immediate search for an Interim Deputy Director for our client, the Ecology Center, a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting healthy communities and driving environmental education in the Berkeley, CA area! This is a hybrid role approximately 4 days a week with an ideal work schedule of 3 days onsite and 1 day remote. Some weeks may require a 5 day work schedule. 

The Ecology Center Interim Deputy Director is responsible for maintaining highly efficient administrative, personnel, facilities, and financial infrastructure that enables effective organizational management. The Interim Deputy Director is part of the Leadership Team and serves as the organization’s senior manager in the absence of the Executive Director. The Interim Deputy Director supervises the financial and administrative and operational staff located at the recycling facility. They work with the Program Directors on administrative responsibilities at the San Pablo Avenue facility. The Deputy Director works closely with the Personnel and Finance Committees of the Board and under the general oversight of the Executive Director. 

The Interim Deputy Director will play a supportive role in executing the organization's program-wide internally focused goals, improving organizational culture, service delivery, and operations at the Ecology Center. The ideal candidate will cultivate a culture that values excellence, energy, innovation, collaboration, respect, trust, and accountability, all while facilitating a smooth leadership transition.

Essential Duties:
  • Direct all operational aspects, including facilities and recycling management, information technology, human resources, and finance.
  • Evaluate and propose changes to restructure the operations leadership function in partnership with the Executive Director.
  • Provide input on organizational structure and strategic planning alongside the Executive Director and leadership team.
  • Monitor the organization's finances, including tracking the income and expenditures against the budget, and propose solutions to improve financial performance to the Executive Director.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Finance to address any financial issues and seek approval for proposed solutions from the Executive Director.
  • Supervise and support daily operations under the Recycling Manager, Director of Finance, and Human Resources Manager.
  • Oversee HR policies and procedures, including recruitment, benefits management, union matters, training and development, and provide guidance on HR issues to the leadership team.
  • Participate in employee hiring and termination processes if necessary and recommend new positions as required.
  • Encourage, supervise, and motivate staff for collaborative work and monitor their performance effectively.
  • Collaborate with staff and local management on day-to-day operational issues, including grants, compliance, technology, and facility needs.
  • Ensure state and federal grant compliance in collaboration with the Director of Finance and Program Directors.
  • Contribute to initiatives that promote diversity, equity, and inclusion within the organization.
  • Ensure compliance with all required permits and filings.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant labor laws.
  • Oversee and manage worker’s compensation program.
  • Manage response to and participate in conduct of employee and union grievances and disciplinary procedures as necessary.
  • Support union contract negotiations as needed.
  • Oversee employee safety programs and ensure training and compliance with by staff.
  • Oversee filings of all insurance claims.
  • Oversee recycling program short- and long-term goals, issues, and key relationships.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

WHAT YOU NEED TO BE SUCCESSFUL
  • Extensive years of experience in environmental nonprofit or similar field.
  • Management experience, preferably in an environmental nonprofit environment.
  • Demonstrated excellence in planning, implementing, and evaluating organization-wide management initiatives.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, able to work well with a wide range of people. 
  • Strong coaching, teaching, training, organizational, and time management skills.
  • Demonstrated ability and willingness to work under pressure, meet tight deadlines, and handle multiple tasks simultaneously while maintaining attention to detail. 
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills. Demonstrated resourcefulness and ability to take initiative in the development and completion of projects.
  • Demonstrated competence in working with diverse clients, client communities, and organizations.  Strong sense of customer service and the ability to follow through on projects and deliverables. 

COMPENSATION
This opportunity offers an hourly range of $72-77/hr. DOE and the chance to contribute to an organization focused on building up the community and driving change. Additionally, 
medical, dental, vision, and voluntary life insurance, an employee assistance plan (EAP), and commuter and transit benefits for those who are working on average 30 or more hours per week. An employee retirement plan is also available.
