Scion Nonprofit Staffing has been engaged to conduct a high-priority search for a Director of Development for our client, an organization who helps policymakers make informed choices by providing objective, top-tier, non-partisan evidence-based insights. This is an exciting direct-hire, hybrid position in San Francisco.

Position Overview:
Reporting to the Vice President of Communications, the Director of Development is responsible for directing strategic initiatives aimed at securing support via foundation and government grants, alongside contributions from individuals and corporations. This role involves supervising development personnel, establishing team objectives and priorities, and overseeing internal and external processes.


Responsibilities:
  • Implements a sustainable, multiyear fundraising strategy encompassing major gifts, project funding (from foundations, government sources, and individuals), sponsorships, and planned giving.
  • Collaborates on the formulation of fundraising tactics aligned with the organization's mission and principles.
  • Sets annual fundraising objectives, strategies, and timelines for the development department, striving to meet or surpass these targets.
  • Identifies and nurtures major gift prospects, corporate sponsors, and foundation donors.
  • Directly manages a portfolio of individual and corporate major donors ($50,000 and above).
  • Acts as the primary liaison for the president's key prospects and prominent donors.
  • Plans and orchestrates campaigns and special events aimed at engaging donors and potential supporters, raising funds, and enhancing the organization's visibility.
  • Works closely with the board of directors (including the president) to secure philanthropic backing and expand connections with current and prospective funders and donors.
  • Cultivates board member involvement in fundraising efforts and prospect identification.
  • Provides regular development activity updates to the board.
  • Promotes a culture of fundraising across departments, leveraging organizational priorities and strengths.
  • Supports research managers in securing funding for projects, programs, and new ventures.
  • Assumes a senior management role within the communications department, overseeing personnel and operations.
  • Collaborates with communication colleagues to develop and implement effective donor communication strategies and marketing materials.
  • Supervises and mentors a team of fundraising professionals, offering direction, training, and assistance.
  • Responsibilities include setting individual performance targets, monitoring progress, fostering professional growth opportunities, and providing feedback to ensure fundraising objectives are achieved or exceeded.
  • Tracks and analyzes fundraising metrics to assess performance and adapt strategies as necessary.
  • Monitors donor engagement and retention rates, evaluates revenue streams, and makes data-driven decisions to advance fundraising goals.
  • Ensures adherence to best practices in prospect research.
  • Supervises the upkeep of donor databases, utilization of data analytics, and monitoring of moves management processes.
  • Collaborates with finance personnel on budget development and financial reporting, ensuring compliance with funding regulations and documentation requirements for annual audits.

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent qualification, coupled with extensive experience in fundraising/development. Preferably in environments such as academia, foundations, or organizations focused on public policy.
  • Substantial managerial experience, with a track record of setting goals, motivating team members, and providing effective guidance and support.
  • Demonstrated success in soliciting major gifts from both individuals and corporations. Possesses advanced proficiency in major gift fundraising techniques.
  • Extensive knowledge of California and national foundations, along with a deep understanding of the evolving philanthropic landscape.
  • Proven experience in managing donor and sponsorship programs. Familiarity with various digital fundraising techniques and strategies, including direct mail, email, web, and social media campaigns.
  • Strong skills in prospect research and analysis.
  • Experience in planning and executing donor cultivation and stewardship events.
  • Organizational and administrative capabilities to ensure compliance with grant, contract, and audit requirements.
  • Exceptional written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills, with a high level of discretion.
  • Collaborative work approach, with the ability to build relationships and collaborate effectively across diverse teams.
  • Excellent public speaking skills, capable of representing organizational leadership at public events.
  • Proficient in MS Office applications and fundraising/wealth screening software.

Compensation:
This opportunity offers an annual salary of between $171,000-$214,000. The comprehensive benefits package includes medical, dental, and vision insurance for employee and dependents. The organization contributes the equivalent of 9% of the salary towards the retirement plan. The organization provides 12 paid holidays and 28 days of PTO annually (PTO balance increases with tenure), and more!
