Scion Nonprofit has been engaged to conduct an immediate search for an experienced Controller for our client, a wonderful Nonprofit organization based in Washington, DC! In this role, the Controller oversees the accounting, budgeting, payroll, AP and AR functions for the organization as well as financial controls, plans, reporting and policies; as well as providing guidance to department heads and committees. This is a full time, direct hire role, hybrid role.

  • Compensation range is $150-160k, depending on experience

What you will be doing:
  • Overseeing an accounting team including payroll, AP, AR
  • Review, revise and refresh current financial policies, procedures, and practices for financial functions, communications and reporting.
  • Ensure internal accounting controls, procedures and policies are functioning in a manner to safeguard organization assets; and that all transactions are executed with proper authorization and record.
  • Ensure transactions follow GAAP best practices
  • Financial reporting and analysis of information and trends
  • Work closely with departmental and committee heads/chairs in the development of annual budgeting including guiding the documentation of spending and variances
  • Manage investment and banking relationships
  • Ensures appropriate and effective follow-up to gifts and bequests
  • Manage the external audit process, ensuring auditors have all information requested
  • Non-profit accounting form/schedule preparation including D-20, Form 990 and 990-T
  • Ensures compliance with local, state, and federal legal requirements; and advising leadership on changes and actions needed to adhere to existing, current, and future legislation

What you will need:
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field (accounting, finance, business administration)
  • CPA is required
  • Senior level accounting/finance expertise with prior management experience
  • Demonstrated experience in finance/accounting in a non-profit/association setting
  • Experience with non-profit specific finance considerations, such as Form 990, FASB 116, 117, 124
  • Experience leading an external audit is preferred
