Scion Nonprofit Staffing, an award-winning full-service staffing firm, has been engaged to conduct an immediate search for a Controller on behalf of our client, an educational nonprofit that inspires diverse young people to participate in team-based STEM programs. This remote full-time role can be located anywhere in the state of Washington and requires the ability to travel to the Seattle metro area once a month.

POSITION SUMMARY:
Reporting to the President, you will play a pivotal role in a collaborative team, overseeing all financial, accounting, and human resource operations. This includes forecasting, reporting, budgeting, day-to-day financial activities, grant compliance, and long-term financial planning. You will serve as a key leadership team member, working closely with the President, fundraising and program leaders, the Board Finance Committee, as well as the Board of Directors.

Qualified candidates will bring experience with accounting, forecasting, and financial analysis, along with the ability to communicate and collaborate across all functions in the organization. This position requires process rigor and attention to detail, balanced by the freedom to bring new ideas to the table and contribute to strategic planning discussions with the leadership team and board.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Manage and develop the accounting staff to ensure operational efficiency.
  • Provide clear and timely financial information to support informed decision-making.
  • Prepare financial statements in accordance with GAAP, oversee tax filings, and manage the annual audit process.
  • Manage, direct, and mentor a Staff Accountant.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally to support program delivery and advance our client’s strategic mission.
  • Lead the annual budgeting process in collaboration with the President and leadership team.
  • Evaluate organizational performance against budgets and long-term strategy.
  • Identify and implement improvements in financial processes and systems.
  • Oversee cash flow planning to ensure adequate funds are available.
  • Engage with the Board finance committee and board of directors on financial planning and projections.
  • Ensure compliance with all financial regulations and legal requirements.
  • Manage human resource functions and benefits administration.
  • Stay updated on nonprofit finance best practices and relevant state and federal laws.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Minimum 8 years of finance leadership experience, including accounting; nonprofit experience strongly preferred.
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or related field; CPA certification is advantageous.

  • Experience in financial modeling, audits, forecasting, and reporting.
  • Knowledge of nonprofit accounting principles, reporting standards, and regulations.
  • Proficiency in fund accounting software and managing restricted grants.
  • Excellent analytical skills, coupled with creativity and strategic thinking.
  • Inspiring leadership style with a proven ability to mentor and motivate teams.
  • Effective communication skills, particularly in conveying financial information to non-finance professionals.
  • Commitment to teamwork and collaborative problem-solving

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:

In addition to a salary of $115-125K, this opportunity offers a comprehensive benefits package that includes health, dental, vision, 3 weeks PTO, 11 paid holidays plus the week off between Christmas and New Years, life insurance, STD/LTD, 401k + matching, and a health savings account.
