Scion Nonprofit Staffing, an award-winning full-service staffing firm, has been engaged to conduct an immediate search for a Controller with a CPA (active or inactive) on behalf of our client, a nonprofit research institution dedicated to propelling research that improves human health. POSITION SUMMARY:
As the Controller, you will play a pivotal role in a collaborative team and be responsible for the effective fiscal management of the organization. This includes financial reporting, strategic planning, general accounting, budget and forecast projections, and cash management. You will be a key leadership team member, working closely with the CFO, directing day-to-day accounting activities, reporting processes, and financial operations, and maintaining effective controls and accounting standards.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Collaborate closely with the CFO and senior leadership team to prepare the Institute's annual budget. Monitor budget performance, identify overspending and underspending issues, and recommend remediation strategies. Additionally, assist the CFO and leadership team in preparing financial analyses, projections, and budgets as needed.
  • Maintain the highest degree of professional integrity and honesty to ensure the financial health of the organization and contribute positively to the overall effectiveness and culture of the Institute. 
  • Manage asset management systems, including reporting and maintaining depreciation and amortization schedules. Collaborate with department heads and scientists to purchase capital equipment and oversee a schedule of all maintenance agreements, service contracts, and related timelines.
  • Oversee the Institute's General Ledger and all accounting functions daily. This includes managing accounts receivable and accounts payable and the month-end and year-end closing processes. Prepare associated reports such as balance sheets, income statements, and payroll and vacation accrual reconciliations.
  • Ensure compliance with GAAP accounting standards for all financial transactions and reporting. Develop and maintain business processes and accounting policies to enhance internal controls. Schedule, coordinate, and oversee external audits, ensuring that all compliance filings are accurate and submitted on time.
  • Prepare all tax reporting documents for employees and the Institute, including employee wage and benefit summaries. Collaborate with external tax accountants to provide timely information for annual tax filings. Compile W-9s for vendors and ensure accurate and timely preparation and distribution of 1099 forms at year-end.
  • Oversee and direct cash management activities, including supervising cash flow and reconciliation. Analyze bank statements to optimize the cash position and make recommendations for strengthening it as needed. Additionally, manage federal fund drawdowns.
  • Responsible for accurate records management. Ensure the Institute's official accounting records are maintained correctly in compliance with internal policies, external laws and regulations, and GAAP principles.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A bachelor's degree with a concentration in finance or accounting, MBA is advantageous.
  • 8-10+ years of related, progressively responsible experience.
  • CPA required- Active or Inactive.
  • Extensive knowledge and experience with nonprofit fund accounting and GAAP.
  • Proven track record in financial management and reporting.
  • Experience with NetSuite and ADP a plus.
  • Strong leadership and communication skills.
  • Ability to analyze, synthesize, and communicate complex accounting issues clearly and concisely.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:
In addition to a salary of $180-200k, this opportunity offers a comprehensive benefits package that includes 100% paid health, dental, vision, HRA, paid life insurance 2x base salary, up to $250k, FSA, paid time off, paid sick leave, paid holidays, and a 401k plan with employer contributions up to 6% with immediate vesting.

This is a hybrid role, on-site 3 days a week and remote 2 days a week.
