Scion Nonprofit Staffing has been engaged to conduct a search for an Associate Director of Media & Communications (Nonprofit) on behalf of our client, an established nonprofit organization that is on a mission to maintain and uplift communities in Oakland, CA to help them thrive! This is a wonderful, full-time, Oakland-based remote, direct-hire opportunity with a dedicated, mission-driven, and experienced team addressing gentrification!

The Associate Director of Media & Communications (Nonprofit) will be responsible for driving nonprofit brand awareness and reputation through effective media relations and social media strategies. They will also play a key role in planning and coordinating internal programs, initiatives, and services by maintaining systems, procedures, and policies across multiple channels of the organization.

Responsibilities:
General Management
  • Liaise with team members to clarify roles, responsibilities, and expectations.
  • Assist in planning, implementing, and coordinating team projects and initiatives.
  • Analyze, present, and report on key performance indicators and progress.
  • Coordinate routine and non-routine tasks, including scheduling meetings, account and vendor management, and administrative support.
Strategic Media Outreach, Earned Media Amplification, and Spokesperson Activities
  • Develop compelling narratives: Craft press releases, story pitches, initiative one-pagers, media kits, and thought leadership pieces.
  • Cultivate relationships with journalists, bloggers, and social media influencers.
  • Optimize content for searchability: Integrate relevant keywords and optimize press releases and content for search engines.
  • Utilize social media, web channels, and influencer partnerships to amplify earned media coverage.
  • Serve as a company spokesperson: Represent the organization in media interviews, press conferences, and other public-facing events.
  • Develop ambassadors for the organization.
Social Listening, Community Advocacy, and Network Building
  • Utilize social listening tools to monitor online conversations.
  • Identify brand advocates and influencers: Recognize and engage with passionate supporters.
  • Foster community around the brand by encouraging user-generated content.
  • Measure social sentiment: Analyze social media data to understand audience sentiment.
  • Develop relationships with key industry stakeholders, thought leaders, and potential partners.
Community Engagement & Stewardship
  • Oversee the recruitment and onboarding of new team members.
  • Provide ongoing training and development opportunities to enhance team skills and knowledge.
  • Evaluate team performance and provide feedback to ensure continuous improvement.
  • Collaborate with creative directors to ensure the team's creative output aligns with the brand's vision.
  • Provide guidance and support on developing innovative and engaging concepts.
  • Monitor the progress of projects, ensuring they are completed on time, within budget, and to a high-quality standard.
  • Address any challenges or roadblocks that may arise during project execution.

Requirements:
  • Seasoned experience in managing nonprofit media & communications initiatives with success in leading small teams across departments.
  • Demonstrated experience in culture and arts programming with expertise in program as well as event oversight to monitor and evaluate success.
  • Development of media and communications initiatives for events is required.
  • Valid Drivers Licensed with the ability to travel on occasion around Oakland and neighboring counties.
  • An effective, team-oriented leader who is invested in fostering a culture of operational success while being adaptable to the changing needs of a growing organization.
  • Ability to work events and weekends when required for events, etc.
  • Proficient in Salesforce, Social Media Platforms, Google Workspace, or other related operational software.
  • Lead with empathy to relate openly and supportively with diverse groups of people from wide varieties of backgrounds internally and externally.
  • Excellent communication, presentation, and organizational skills with the ability to task switch and prioritize last-minute requests when working under tight deadlines.

Compensation:
This exciting direct-hire opportunity
