Scion Nonprofit Staffing is thrilled to present an outstanding opportunity for a hands on Chief Financial Officer (CFO) for a rapidly growing $20M+ organization. This hybrid opportunity is required onsite Monday through Thursday in Los Angeles (ZIP code 90048) and remote on Fridays. Founded in 1992, this highly regarded national nonprofit provides programs supporting more than 150,000 children in 728 schools and community sites across the United States. THE ROLE: The ideal candidate will have significant nonprofit finance experience managing a diverse revenue mix, including public and private funding, with experience in organizations of similar or larger size (budget of $20M+) and an expert level understanding of A-133 single audits.
Reporting directly to the President, the CFO will oversee the Finance, Operations, and Systems functions, working closely with Executive Directors, the National Board Treasurer, and the Audit Committee. This role involves managing a high-performing Finance Department of approximately 11 team members and leading the development of a cohesive, efficient team. The CFO will also be responsible for overseeing diverse funding sources, including federal and state grants, as well as private donations.
RESPONSIBILITIES Finance Leadership & Strategy
Oversee all financial functions and performance of the organization.
Provide strategic leadership and guidance on finance and operations issues.
Collaborate with the executive leadership team on long-term financial planning, asset analysis, cash projections, identifying fiscal challenges, and national and chapter-level revenue planning.
Attend Board and subcommittee meetings, presenting financial reports to the National Board, Finance Committee, and Audit Committee.
Manage departmental budgets, providing sound financial advice to leadership.
Lead the annual audit process, serving as the liaison between auditors and the Audit Committee, and ensuring completion and approval of audited statements and required filings.
Work with the Development Department to ensure revenue sources are accurately reflected in financial reports, in compliance with GAAP and industry standards.
Partner with the Director of HR to manage and reflect the financial impact of employee benefits.
Cultivate stakeholder relationships at all levels.
Finance & Business Operations
Oversee organizational operations, including contracts, leases, and agreements, ensuring proper approvals.
Manage legal matters as they arise, collaborating with HR as needed.
Identify and implement best practices to improve internal procedures.
Oversee risk management and ensure compliance with nonprofit best practices.
Manage certifications, licenses, and reporting for business operations at the state and national levels.
Oversee banking relationships and manage the organization’s accounts payable vendor.
Systems Department
Lead the Systems Department, ensuring adequate resource allocation.
Collaborate with the Director of Systems to integrate and ensure compliance across platforms (e.g., Raisers Edge, Financial Edge, Paylocity).
Oversee IT operations with an outsourced company to optimize efficiency.
Endowment & Investments
Oversee investment activities related to the newly created endowment.
Prepare endowment and investment reports for the CEO and President, along with customized reporting as needed.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor’s degree required; MBA highly preferred.
CPA highly preferred.
10+ years of professional experience responsible for finance teams in large. nonprofit, philanthropic or academic institutions.
Hands on experience and superb understanding of nonprofit accounting, revenue recognition, cost allocations, single audit (A-133) requirements.
In depth understanding and hand on experience with the financial management and reporting of federal and foundation grants, contracts and multi-funded projects.
Exceptional leadership skills, with a collaborative spirit and demonstrated ability to inspire and motivate staff.
Strong strategic and implementation skills; ability to grasp the opportunities and challenges of the organization and the role.
Outstanding communicator; excellent speaking, writing, and interpersonal skills.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS
Competitive salary range of $210,000 - $250,000 DOE
