Scion Nonprofit Staffing has been engaged to conduct an immediate search for a Senior Director of External Affairs and Governmental Relations for a distinguished nonprofit organization based in Sacramento, CA, dedicated to advancing impactful advocacy and legislative initiatives that strengthen communities and public policy outcomes. This remote role offers an exciting opportunity to lead advocacy and grassroots engagement efforts that support the organization’s mission and legislative priorities. Reporting directly to the Chief of Governmental Relations, the Senior Director will supervise a statewide team and oversee strategic advocacy programs at local, state, and federal levels.

The ideal candidate is a dynamic, results-oriented professional with exceptional leadership, communication, and organizational skills. This individual will be instrumental in shaping advocacy campaigns, fostering relationships with policymakers, and managing grassroots initiatives. This is a full-time position requiring travel across California, with occasional overnight stays.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Grassroots Advocacy and Engagement
  • Design and implement strategic grassroots programs that mobilize members for political advocacy.
  • Oversee regional outreach efforts to strengthen local engagement in legislative and political initiatives.
  • Educate members on the importance of advocacy and encourage participation in policy discussions.

Leadership and Supervision
  • Manage and mentor a team of grassroots professionals across California, ensuring alignment with organizational goals.
  • Recruit, train, and evaluate team members to support advocacy and outreach efforts.

Legislative and Political Strategy
  • Foster relationships with legislators, policymakers, and stakeholders to promote the organization’s priorities.
  • Develop and execute strategies for legislative campaigns, political action efforts, and ballot measures.
  • Advise leadership on key legislative and political trends.

Program and Campaign Management
  • Coordinate advocacy efforts at the local, state, and federal levels, including events with legislators and stakeholders.
  • Assist with fundraising activities for the Political Action Committee (PAC).
  • Manage program budgets, timelines, and reporting requirements.

Collaboration and Representation
  • Work closely with internal teams on communications, marketing, and strategic initiatives.
  • Represent the organization at meetings, conferences, and community events.
  • Prepare reports, presentations, and publications to support advocacy efforts.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor’s degree in political science, public administration, business, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in grassroots advocacy, legislative relations, or political campaign management.
  • Strong understanding of legislative processes, political action committees, and grassroots mobilization.
  • Exceptional interpersonal, communication, and leadership skills.
  • Ability to travel extensively across California.

Preferred
  • Advanced degree in a relevant field.
  • Proven track record in managing statewide advocacy campaigns.
  • Familiarity with nonprofit organizations and membership-based associations.
 
COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS
This opportunity offers a competitive salary range of $120,000–$130,000 (dependent on experience) and a comprehensive benefits package, including health, dental, and vision coverage, life and disability insurance, a pension retirement plan, 10 paid holidays, two additional weeks of paid leave in December, 15 days of paid time off, and sick leave.
