Scion Executive Search (SES) has been exclusively retained to by Contra Costa Crisis Center to recruit for a highly compassionate nonprofit Executive Director (ED) with a demonstrated commitment and passion for providing critical and free crisis intervention for callers experiencing emotional distress. This is a unique opportunity to lead a highly regarded crisis intervention nonprofit, making a meaningful impact to those in need. This full-time, on-site leadership opportunity located in Walnut Creek, CA, offers an annual salary of $150,000-$165,000 and a robust benefits package.

About Contra Costa Crisis Center
Contra Costa Crisis Center is a nonprofit organization providing 24/7 crisis intervention, suicide prevention, grief support, and 211 information and referral services. Nationally certified by the American Association of Suicidology, the center upholds the highest standards of service while ensuring caller confidentiality. The Contra Costa Crisis Center’s mission is to keep people safe and alive and to connect them to culturally relevant services.

Position Overview
The ED serves as both the strategic leader and public representative of the Crisis Center, ensuring operational excellence, financial sustainability, and compliance with all regulations. This role requires a dynamic leader to engage with the Board, staff, donors, and community stakeholders while advancing the organization’s mission.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead daily operations and oversee administrative and leadership staff.
  • Develop and implement strategic plans in collaboration with the Board and leadership team.
  • Maintain strong relationships with donors, stakeholders, and the community.
  • Guide marketing and outreach efforts to expand awareness and engagement.
  • Establish measurable goals for programs, ensuring quality and cultural relevance.
  • Maintain service excellence through staff supervision, protocol development, and continuous improvement.

Required Experience
  • 6+ years in an executive leadership role within a social services nonprofit ($1M+ budget).
  • Bachelor’s degree or a master’s highly preferred.
  • Clinical or professional experience with 211, 988, or mental health crisis services is highly desirable.
  • Financial and business acumen, including nonprofit accounting, budgeting, revenue management, and sustainability strategies.
  • Team leadership and HR expertise, including hiring, staff development, retention, and collaboration.
  • Training in cultural competency, inclusion, and diversity best practices, with a commitment to equitable service delivery.
  • Proficiency in software and databases for operational efficiency.
  • Exceptional communication skills, including public speaking, writing, and cross-cultural engagement.
  • Fundraising expertise, including major gifts, donor stewardship, and public sector funding.
  • Commitment to accountability, team building, and maintaining a positive work environment.

Additional Requirements
  • Valid CA driver’s license, reliable transportation, and current auto insurance.
  • Ability to pass a background check upon hire.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:
In addition to a competitive base salary of $150,000-$165,000 DOE, Contra Costa Crisis Center offers a very generous benefits package that includes medical dental, vision, life insurance, 403(b) with matching, 25 days’ vacation, 11 paid holidays, generous allocation of sick days.
