Scion Executive Search (www.scionexecutivesearch.com) has been retained to conduct a search for Nia Tero’s incoming Director of Finance. Nia Tero is a quickly growing nonprofit focused on working in solidarity with Indigenous peoples and movements worldwide, promoting Indigenous guardianship of thriving homelands and waters everywhere. This organization maintains an inclusive culture, guided by Indigenous wisdom and practices. Their governing bodies, leadership, and staff are a highly diverse group of Indigenous and non-Indigenous individuals working to sustain the territories and cultures of Indigenous peoples across the Earth. This amazing position is full-time and currently remote, with potential for hybrid work in Seattle, WA later in 2022. The position must be in Pacific Time or Mountain Time.
 
Position Overview:
 
The Director of Finance will lead Nia Tero’s accounting and day-to-day financial management operations, including audits, tax filings, and reporting & analysis. Reporting to the Managing Director, Operations, this position will seek to maximize efficiency and streamline the organization’s financial activities through the maintenance and development of sound financial processes and procedures. Additionally, this position will play a key role in the development and ongoing monitoring of Nia Tero’s annual budget as well as building both short-term and long-term forecasting models. The ideal candidate will have the demonstrated ability to roll up their sleeves and work collaboratively in a hands-on capacity while also having the ability to think creatively, and proactively build systems. The position will also manage and mentor a Staff Accountant and oversee spending, compliance issues, and relationships with key service providers.
 
Key Responsibilities:
  • Lead the day-to-day financial processes for the organization including payroll, local and state tax   filings, managing corporate cards, and overseeing financial data reconciliation processes between all systems (audits, expense reports, financial software, etc.).
  • Oversee and develop financial reports in Salesforce (CRM), foundation Connect (Grants System), and Sage Intacct (finance system) in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Manage annual audit & 990 preparation in coordination with external CPAs.
  • Clearly communicate  monthly and annual financial statements, collate financial reporting for all donor reports, and oversee financial projects and programs, including grants accounting.
  • Support the Managing Director, Operations in the annual budget and planning process; review all financial plans and budgets while monitoring progress and changes throughout the year.
  • Develop a reliable cashflow projection process and reporting mechanisms.
  • Create financial models and other long term planning tools in partnership with the Managing Director, Operations and other senior leadership.
  • Mature and develop dynamic financial presentations to clearly communicate complex financial information to a wide variety of audiences.
  • In partnership with the Managing Director, Operations, mature, refine, and implement the organization’s financial processes and internal regulations.  
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s or Associate’s degree in accounting or equivalent work experience.
    • CPA license preferred
  • 7+ years of experience in an accounting- or finance-related position with increasing levels of responsibilities.
  • Experience with nonprofit and GAAP accounting principles.
    • International accounting experience is required.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Substantial cultural fluency and sensitivity.
  • Solid organizational, time management, and project management skills with an emphasis on managing multiple, time-sensitive tasks within a fast-paced, high-volume organization.
  • Familiarity with modeling complex financial scenarios, creating budgets, running reports, and analyzing variances.
  • Demonstrated ability to present complex financial data in easily comprehensible terms, models, etc.
  • Proven track record of communicating financial information to a wide audience, with varying and unique forms of financial literacy and practices.
  • Experience with managing staff on a regular basis with a patient, detailed, and teamwork-oriented mindset.
  • Robust troubleshooting, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Fluency in Spanish, French, and/or Portuguese is highly preferred.
Compensation and Benefits:
