Scion Executive Search (SES) has been retained to conduct a search for an Executive Director on behalf of our unparalleled client, Family Violence Appellate Project, the first-ever non-profit organization in California and Washington state dedicated to providing free appellate representation to survivors of domestic violence and gender-based abuse. The incoming Executive Director will lead this exciting resource and social justice movement for gender-based violence survivors and advocates into the future!


ABOUT FAMILY VIOLENCE APPELLATE PROJECT:
Family Violence Appellate Project (FVAP) is dedicated to working to end domestic violence and gender-based abuse by creating a robust, influential body of case law to change how courts throughout two states respond to survivors and their children. FVAP shapes the law to prioritize the safety of survivors and children by representing clients in appellate courts, submitting amicus curiae briefs in cases of statewide importance, requesting publication of important cases, and engaging in legislative and systems change advocacy efforts.

With an extremely diverse list of clientele, FVAP is a proponent of gender and racial justice, aiming to serve individuals and advocates throughout California and Washington states, including rural, suburban, and urban populations from the most marginalized communities. They also support a statewide network of gender-based violence and legal aid service providers by providing training, technical assistance, and written informational materials, and by facilitating information exchange among statewide stakeholders supporting survivors. POSITION OVERVIEW:
FVAP is seeking a social justice minded individual committed to working on behalf of survivors of gender-based violence and their children. They will be a bold thinker who’s passionate about systems change and a skilled communicator who can inspire people to join their movement. Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director will bring a vast array of skills, experiences, and viewpoints to aid and serve FVAP’s diverse communities and compassionately lead and empower a mid-sized nonprofit team of 18, which consists of program, administrative, finance, development, and communication staff to ensure a strong organizational infrastructure.

FVAP’s offices are located in Oakland, California, convenient to multiple bus lines and BART, and in Seattle, Washington. They are currently operating under a hybrid work environment, working in the office at least one day a week, with the remainder remotely. Some driving and interstate travel may be required.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Partner with the Board of Directors and the staff to outline a strategic vision for the organization’s future and assess progress towards planned goals.
  • Steward and aid the Board’s functions, including meetings, committees, recruitment, and strategic planning.
  • Cultivate necessary resources to maintain the current $2.5 million annual budget and expand resources to implement future strategic initiatives. Guide donors through individualized tactics, including the current multi-year, comprehensive campaign aiming to raise $2.7 million over 3 years.
  • Overall responsibility for securing, reporting, and maintaining compliance with several government funding sources totaling approximately $1.3 million a year.
  • Oversee the organization’s financial practices and management, including reviewing monthly financial statements, accounting system entries, accounting protocols, and tax returns/audits to maintain impeccable financial controls.
  • Supervise several staff responsible for key organizational functions.
  • Further the success and growth of the newly opened Washington state office, while ensuring continued success of the California operation.
  • Support the staff’s well-being and maintain FVAP’s reputation for excellence.
  • Comply with all agency policies and procedures.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Experience as an Executive Director or completion of duties at a comparable level.
  • Devotion to upholding an anti-racist, equitable, and inclusive environment and actively working to implement and strengthen these priorities.
  • Superb verbal and written communication skills and highly organized.
  • Familiarity with nonprofit operations and functions.
  • Donor prospecting capabilities with ability to artfully articulate the organization’s mission.
  • Solid grasp of revenue budgeting and forecasting principals.
  • Experience skillfully managing changing environments and expanding organizations.
  • Proficiency with standard office computer programs, including Microsoft Office suite, Google’s business suite, and Adobe Acrobat.
  • Knowledge or experience working with domestic violence, legal services, gender-based abuse, family courts, or other legal environments and social services preferred.
*This position with our client requires employees to report to work at a physical location. COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:
In addition to a competitive base salary of $164,300 - $180,000, FVAP offers a generous benefits package, including subsidized health, dental, vision, life, and AD&D insurance; 3 weeks paid time off/year with longevity increases; 13 paid holidays/year; 40 hours paid sick leave, plus additional accrued sick leave; 401(k) retirement plan with 3% employer match after 1 year, eligible after 9-months of employment; FSA plan for commuting, parking, health, and dependent care expenses; long-term disability insurance; Employee Assistance Plan and travel assistance; and paid continuing education. The position is full-time (40 hours/week), exempt, and at-will.
