Scion Nonprofit has been engaged to conduct an immediate search for a Deputy Director on behalf of our highly regarded client, an incredible organization committed to wildlife conservation. This critical position plays a leading role in the organization’s future growth and strategic direction, supporting its evolution and sustaining its determination in driving systemic and durable change.
Reporting to the Executive Director, this full-time opportunity is for immediate hire and operates remotely, with the option of hybrid work at our client’s offices.

Position Summary:
Our client seeks an energetic and committed Deputy Director with prior environmental conservation experience who will play a critical strategic leadership role in guiding the organization’s programmatic and organizational efforts. A qualified candidate will possess the skills to operate on strategic, managerial, and hands-on levels, and will also partner with the Executive Director and Development Director to secure funding that resources our client’s work. Bringing high emotional intelligence and a commitment to learning and growth, the Deputy Director will split their time between being a chief strategy officer and a chief campaign driver, performing both roles in close partnership with the Executive Director.
The Deputy Director will oversee internal- and external-facing responsibilities, ranging from project management to campaign development and oversight. Critical to this position is collaboratively charting the future growth and strategic direction of our client with its organizational leaders. A successful candidate will be a strategic partner in vision setting and strategic engagement and planning, work to pinpoint opportunities and challenges and advance solutions, guide the organization’s conservation work, and manage the Legal and Organizing departments. This permanent position will support the organization in its next phase of growth as it transitions, over the next 2 years, from an Executive Director with over 20 years of tenure to a new era of leadership.

Primary Responsibilities:
  • Deliver strategic capacity and guidance in conjunction with the Executive Director, Conservation Director, and Program Directors.
  • Support annual, campaign, and work planning.
  • Collaborate with the Conservation Director to analyze needs, goals, and strategic plans, and develop and implement goals, objectives, policies, and priorities.
  • Establish and maintain strong internal and external relationships.
  • Serve as a key leader in communications, knowledge dissemination, and reporting, and support internal communications to ensure transparency and appropriate information sharing.
  • Represent the organization in the western environmental advocacy space and other public venues.
  • Partner with the Executive Director and the Executive team in leadership activities such as administration, human resources, and organizational planning.
  • Act as a visible and approachable coach, mentor, general resource, and sounding board for staff and colleagues.
  • Design and manage teams to deliver outstanding conservation outcomes.
  • Guarantee fiduciary accountability of programs, legal, and organizing in collaboration with the Director of Finance & Operations.
  • Develop thought leadership around specific topics and emerging practice areas.
  • Partner with the Conservation Director to ensure effective staff deployment and workload balance, as well as growth opportunities on the conservation program side.
  • Cultivate and solicit select donors and foundations in partnership with the Executive Director and Development team.
  • Remaining cognizant of current and future needs, collaborate with the Executive team to identify and implement best practices and improve systems across all aspects of the organization.
  • Contribute to the development, implementation, and rollout of plans for processes, internal infrastructures, reporting systems, and organizational policies for growth, inclusion, and a sustainably healthy work environment.
  • Partner with the Executive team on budgeting and financial duties.
Qualifications:
  • 8+ years of management experience in a nonprofit organization or government agency.
  • Prior work in the Environmental Conservation space is a must.
  • Bachelor’s degree required; a master’s degree in conservation or environmental science is a plus.
  • Demonstrated experience with leadership, business operations, planning, project management, and budgeting.
  • Proven experience with achieving positive outcomes and earning the respect and trust of peers and stakeholders while building authentic relationships.
  • Knowledge and understanding of political, social, economic, conservation, and ecological dynamics in the Western portion of the United States.
  • Demonstrated strategic thinking, along with critical analysis and problem-solving skills that lend themselves to teamwork and collaboration.
  • Exceptional ability to build lasting relationships in a complex environmental space.
  • Ability to work effectively independently—using one’s own initiative and delivering high-quality products on time—as well as when acting as part of a team.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication, analytical, interpersonal, team-management, leadership, and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to prioritize and oversee multiple programs simultaneously while ensuring they are on schedule and deliverables are to standard.
  • Demonstrates integrity, accountability, tenacity, innovative thinking, self-discipline, grit, kindness, and a high degree of emotional intelligence.

Compensation & Benefits:
This impactful role offers the opportunity to work with devoted, mission-driven professionals. Our client offers a competitive starting annual base salary of $105,000–$120,000 (dependent on experience); a friendly and flexible team-based environment with an excellent benefits package that includes full health, vision, dental, life, and disability coverage; a 403(b)retirement plan with a 3% match; paid and unpaid health and family leave; a sabbatical policy; sick leave; 3 weeks paid vacation to start; and 14 holidays including your birthday.
